Top 10 High Schools in the US

Benjamin Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” 

On April 30, 2019, the U.S. News released their 2019 Best High Schools ranking. The U.S. News used the data on more than 23,000 public schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. The ranking indicators used to produce the overall score are College Readiness (30%), Math and Reading Proficiency (20%), Math and Reading Performance (20%), College Curriculum Breadth (10%), Undeserved Student Performance (10%), and Graduation Rate (10%).

Out of the top 10 announced schools, two of them are traditional public high schools, three are charter schools (receives government funding but operates independently), and five of them are magnet schools (schools that offer specialized courses). Here are the 2019 Best High Schools in the U.S. according to U.S. News:

  1. Academic Magnet High School
    1. From Charleston County School District in North Charleston, South Carolina (SC), the Academic Magnet High School ranked first in the magnet high schools and the U.S. News 2019 Best High School. With regards to the ranking factors, the school ranked first in the College readiness index ranking (tie), math and reading proficiency rank (tie), math and reading performance rank (tie), and graduation rate rank (tie). The school placed in the 21st rank in the college curriculum breadth index rank.
  2. Maine School of Science and Mathematics
    1. The 2nd best high school and magnet high school is the Maine School of Science and Mathematics from Limestone, Maine (ME). The ranking factors show that Maine School of Science and Mathematics ranked first in College Readiness Index Rank (tie), Math and Reading Proficiency Rank (tie), and Math and Reading Performance Rank. The school placed 71st in the College Curriculum Breadth Index Rank and it ranked 6,615th in Graduation Rate. 
  3. BASIS Scottsdale
    1. BASIS Scottsdale from Arizona (AZ), a charter school, placed 3rd in the National Ranking. BASIS Scottsdale ranked first in College Readiness Index (tie), College Curriculum Breadth Index (tie), and Math and Reading Proficiency Rank. The school ranked 67th in Math and Reading Performance Rank and 1621st in Graduation Rate. 
  4. Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology
    1. Thomas Jefferson High school, the 3rd school in Magnet High Schools, ranked 4th in National Rankings. Thomas Jefferson High School ranked first in College Readiness Index (tie), Math and Reading Proficiency (tie), and Graduation Rate (tie). The school ranked 8th in College Curriculum Breadth Index and placed 84th in Math and Reading Performance Rank.
  5. Central Magnet School
    1. The 4th Magnet High School and the 5th in the ranking is the Central Magnet School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (TN). Out of the other schools, Central Magnet ranked first in Math and Reading Proficiency (tie), Math and Reading Performance (tie) and Graduation rate (tie). Central Magnet School ranked 42nd in College Readiness and 79th in College Curriculum Breadth.
  6. Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology
    1. The 6th placer in National rankings is the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology from Lawrenceville, Georgia (GA). The ranking factors showed that Gwinnett School placed 1st on College Readiness, Math and Reading Proficiency, and Graduate Rate. They ranked 24th in College Curriculum Breadth and 111th in Math and Reading Performance.
  7. Haas Hall Academy
    1. The Haas Hall Academy in Fayetteville, Arkansas (AR) is the 2nd Charter school to place in the National Rankings. The academy placed first in Math and Reading Proficiency (tie) and Math and Reading Performance (tie). It ranked 45th in College Readiness Index, 48th in College Curriculum Breadth Index, and 3694th in Graduation Rate.
  8. International Academy of Macomb
    1. The International Academy of Macomb, 5th Magnet school, claimed the 8th position in the National Rankings. The ranking factors showed that the academy placed 1st in all the 4 sections except the Math and Reading Performance rank where they placed 131st.
  9. Payton College Preparatory High School
    1. The Payton College in Chicago, Illinois (IL) placed 9th in the National Rankings. The school ranked 1st in Math and Reading Proficiency and Performance (tie), 34th in College Curriculum Breadth Index, 61st College Readiness Index, and 1281st in Graduation Rate.
  10. Signature School
    1. The Signature School from Evansville, Indiana is the 3rd Charter High School and placed 10th in National Ranking. The Signature School Ranked 1st in Math and Reading Proficiency and Graduation Rate, 23rd in the College Curriculum Breadth Index, 40th in the College Readiness Index, and 74th in Math and Reading Performance.
